Orgesticuanismus

Orgesticuanismus was Directed and partly Animated by the Belgium artist Mathieu Labaye . It is a tribute to his father Benoît Labaye who suffered from a multiple sclerosis at 29 years old. Benoît Labaye had been confined to a wheelchair since age 40 and died at 55 years old on the 22nd April 2006 as a result of a pneumonia.

When I first watched Orgesticuanismus , I was completely blown away by its originality and stunning 2D animation. Its not until you frame through this highly crafted piece of work you begin to understand the complexity and sheer attention to detail. I have framed through this many times and always spotted something different. One of the favourite scenes amongst many is shown above of a character bowing and flipping his head backwards. Over these 8 frames his chiefs hat turns into a motion blured path of a head and back into a turban that continues to unravel and gradually turns into the hair of another character. It's interesting how every frame is a different character, wearing different clothes and different hair style each pushed into a great pose that only an experienced 2D animator would know how. Some poses are broken with multiple limbs to help the fluidity while others are represented as very organic shapes merging into one another in a more random, incidental way.

Id like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mathieu Labaye on his inspiring work.
